Sweepin' Seas was created as a project for an investigation class at our university.


The idea was to create an interactive app for people to enjoy and have fun. Since we liked to play Minesweeper at the time, we wanted to create an app to play between friends and that's how this project was born.

We reviewed some of the possible competitors that we could face in this industry to review their strengths and weaknesses.

Microsoft Minesweeper: The original game from Microsoft. This was our inspiration to create this app. We grew with this game, but always wanted a way to play with each other and since this version didn’t had that option, we started the idea of building it ourselves.

Minesweeper.io: This game has the ability to play minesweeper with multiple people at the time, but doesn’t offer the option to add and play in private matches with your friends.

For this flowchart, we tried to understand how the user would interact with the game, how would they play and invite friends to host lobbies and have fun.

Once the flowchart was created, we started structuring the design through wireframes to give us an idea on how the user would navigate through the game and how they’d interact with friends.

  • Get a record of your stats and achievements

After the design was structured, we started moving with the game visuals including the colors and typography being used. Our theme here was involving pirates and the beach. The primary beige color simulates the sand and the blue the sea. We also used Lexend Deca as our main font to get easy legibility.

This is a minesweeper game. The idea consists of clicking a square and hoping it doesn’t have mines/bombs. Once you click a square, you can analyze nearby bombs based on the numbers on the screen and try to click all possible squares without detonating bombs. Depending on the game’s difficulty is the amount of squares and bombs on the screen.

On multiplayer you can also set the difficulty of the game if you’re creating a lobby or you can join another lobby. You can share your code with your friends before starting the game. Once in game, you all start playing until one of you wins or all of you lose. You can also chat and review who you’re playing with if you want to share the code with more friends.

This was a fun project to participate in. It helped us to learn more about designing basic games and how people could interact differently at the same time.
